FAQ

WHAT IS “ORTHODONTICS?”

Orthodontics is not merely for improving the aesthetics of the smile; orthodontic treatment improves bad bites (malocclusions). Malocclusions occur as a result of tooth or jaw misalignment. Malocclusions affect the way you smile, chew, clean your teeth or feel about your smile.

WHY SHOULD MALOCCLUSIONS BE TREATED?

According to studies by the American Association of Orthodontists, untreated malocclusions can result in a variety of problems. Crowded teeth are more difficult to properly brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease.

Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping. Crossbites can result in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear. Open Bites can result in tongue – thrusting habits and speech impediments. Ultimately, orthodontics does more than make a pretty smile – it creates a healthier you.

DO I NEED TO CHANGE MY ORAL HYGIENE HABITS WHEN I GET BRACES?

Keeping your teeth, gums and braces healthy during treatment is really important and takes a little more effort than when you’re not wearing braces. You definitely want your teeth stain-free and gums healthy when you get your braces off!

The Cucalon team will show you how to brush and floss when you get your braces on (there are special instruments we can give you to make it easier), but you can always check out these handy patient videos. You’ll still see your family dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups while you’re wearing your braces. You may even want to get a tooth cleaning three times per year during orthodontic treatment.

ARE THERE FOODS THAT I’LL HAVE TO AVOID WHEN WEARING BRACES?

When you’re wearing braces you shouldn’t eat hard, sticky, chewy or crunchy foods. If you have a habit of chewing hard objects like pens, pencils, fingernails and ice, you’ll have to avoid doing that while you have braces, too.

I HEARD BRACES CAN HURT. IS THAT TRUE?

Getting braces isn’t like any other dental treatment. No injections or drills required! When braces are first put on your teeth, the skin of your lips and mouth will need to get used to your braces but this only takes a few days. Sometimes when your wires are adjusted and your teeth are moving, it creates pressure on your gums and teeth, but this becomes manageable in just a few days.

CAN I PLAY SPORTS WHILE WEARING BRACES?

Yes, but make sure you wear a protective mouth guard. Ask Dr. Cucalon to recommend the right kind of mouth guard while you are having orthodontic treatment. Keep your smile beautiful after treatment and wear a mouth guard at every practice and every game. It is better to be cautious than sorry!

CAN I PLAY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS WHILE WEARING BRACES?

With practice and a period of adjustment, braces typically do not interfere with the playing of wind or brass instruments.
